Kuyayki Perú–Minnesota’s Jarana Criolla & Cajón Workshop brought together people of all ages and backgrounds for a vibrant celebration of Peru’s coastal traditions through music, dance, and community. Led by PAPALCA USA founder Victor Ruiz, who traveled from Washington, D.C. for the event, participants learned the basics of the Peruvian cajón the iconic Afro-Peruvian percussion instrument in an engaging, hands-on workshop.
The event also featured captivating cultural performances, including Zamacueca with traditional Peruvian pregones — rhythmic street vendor calls once heard throughout Lima that became part of Peru’s musical storytelling tradition — along with the joyful energy of Festejo and the elegance of Marinera Norteña and Marinera Limeña.
Performances by Marinera champion Anahí Martínez and Victor Ruiz brought Peru’s living coastal heritage to life for Minnesota audiences in a truly unforgettable way.
Community members of all ages gathered for a lively and inspiring free Marinera Norteña workshop led by renowned Marinera champion Anahí Martínez. Passionate about preserving and sharing the beauty of Peru’s national dance, Anahí created a welcoming space where participants from all backgrounds could experience the elegance, rhythm, and cultural richness of Marinera firsthand. Filled with joy, movement, and connection, the workshop became a beautiful celebration of tradition shared with the community.
